چکیده

We investigate the properties of rigid polyelectrolyte solutions in the presence of monovalent salt. The free energy within the Debye-Hückel-Bjerrum (DHBj) theory (Fisher, M. E.; Levin, Y. Phys. Rev. Lett. 1993, 71, 3826) is constructed. It is found that at thermodynamic equilibrium the polyelectrolyte solution consists of clusters composed of one polyion and various counterions. The distribution of the cluster densities is determined by finding the minimum of the Helmholtz free energy. The osmotic pressure and the average charge of the cluster are found and their dependence on Manning parameter ê is elucidated. A good agreement with the experimental results is obtained.

Rayleigh instability of charged aggregates: Role of the dimensionality, ionic strength, and dielectric contrast.

We extended a previous analysis of the classical Rayleigh instability of spherical charged droplets in the presence of neutralizing monovalent counterions [M. Deserno, Eur. Phys. J. E 6, 163 (2001)], by generalizing the problem for suspensions of aggregates with D-dimensional symmetry, corresponding for D = 2 to infinite (rodlike) cylindrical charged bundles and for D = 3 to spherical charged d...

Phase separation in symmetric mixtures of oppositely charged rodlike polyelectrolytes.

Phase separation in salt-free symmetric mixtures of oppositely charged rodlike polyelectrolytes is studied using quasi-analytical calculations. Stability analyses for the isotropic-isotropic and the isotropic-nematic phase transitions in the mixtures are carried out and demonstrate that electrostatic interactions favor nematic ordering. Coexistence curves for the symmetric mixtures are also con...

Theory of competitive counterion adsorption on flexible polyelectrolytes: divalent salts.

The counterion distribution around an isolated flexible polyelectrolyte in the presence of a divalent salt is evaluated using the adsorption model [M. Muthukumar, J. Chem. Phys. 120, 9343 (2004)] that considers the Bjerrum length, salt concentration, and local dielectric heterogeneity as physical variables in the system. Self-consistent calculations of effective charge and size of the polymer s...

Manning free counterion fraction for a rodlike polyion: aqueous solutions of short DNA fragments in presence of very low added salt.

We quantified the Manning free (uncondensed) counterions fraction θ for dilute aqueous solutions of rodlike polyions: 150 bp DNA fragments, in the presence of a very low concentration of monovalent salt c(salt)<0.05 mM. Conductivity measurements of these solutions for DNA base pair concentration range 0.015≤c≤8 mM were complemented by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) measurements of ...

Effective Interactions Between Rigid Polyelectrolytes and Like-charged Planar Surfaces

We study the effective interaction between a planar array of uniformly negatively charged, stiff rods parallel to a negatively charged planar substrate in the absence of salt in a continuous, isotropic dielectric medium. Using Brownian dynamics simulations, we examine the general effects of counterion valence, rod spacing, macroion charge densities, and the rod size on the attractive rod-surfac...
